Headquarters, U.S. Army Forces in the South Pacific Area, General Orders No. 1165 (July 1, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Robert Wilton Curry (ASN: 0-427385), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with an Infantry Company of the 129th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces on 15 March 1944, at Bougainville, Solomon Islands. First Lieutenant Curry steadfastly defended his besieged pillbox against overwhelming odds. Repeatedly assaulted by wave after wave of enemy forces, First Lieutenant Currey fought back fiercely and successfully repulsed each attack. At one point, with his position surrounded by Japanese, he called for mortar fire and directed it so effectively that the attackers were dispersed. Following the attack 190 enemy dead were counted in this penetration area. Four destroyed hostile machine guns lying within ten yards of his emplacement were further evidence of the intensity of the attack. At any time during the action this officer could have withdrawn through a connecting tunnel to safety without censure or criticism. Instead, he courageously chose to remain at his post and defended it over a period of hours with his life constantly in the greatest of danger. His exemplary bravery and superb combat ability, and devotion to duty, exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 37th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
