The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal to Pharmacist’s Mate Second Class Jack Barnett (NSN: 6629235), United States Navy, for heroism while serving as a Corpsman with a Marine Regiment on Saipan, Mariana Islands, on 25 June 1944. When members of a platoon to which he was attached were wounded by enemy machine gun fire, Pharmacist’s Mate Second Class Barnett, disregarding the enemy fire and his own safety, went out in front of the lines under continual fire and rendered aid to the wounded. He remained with them until covering fire could be brought to bear and the wounded removed. On another occasion, when two men were hit by enemy grenades, he went out and dressed their wounds, personally carrying one of them out of the danger area. This he accomplished alone, for the enemy’s constant action had forced accompanying troops to take cover. His conduct during the entire operation demonstrated courage and continual coolness and devotion to duty under fire. His heroic actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
