The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Coxswain Fred Lee Barnett (NSN: 3604928), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity on 26 October 19042 while stationed as gunner on 20-mm Gun #12 aboard the U.S.S. HORNET (CV-8). Shortly after 1000, during an attack by approximately twenty Kogekiki Type 97 Torpedo Aircraft, two planes were observed to be attacking the U.S.S. HORNET from a bearing of about 200 degrees relative from this ship. Coxswain Barnett took these two planes under fire. Two other planes approached from the port bow and strafed the ship, killing and wounding several men in Coxswain Barnett’s vicinity. He was just finishing his third magazine, concentrating on the lead plane of the first mentioned group, when he was hit in the right shoulder and left back by shrapnel. He grasped his shoulder, hesitating for an instant, and then finished his third magazine. He was noticed at this time to be bleeding badly by members of his crew. He ordered a fourth magazine which he expended, maintaining effective fire. He kept cool and efficient control of his gun and crew after having been hit. It is believed his target was destroyed. It was only when there was a lull in the attack that Coxswain Barnett was relieved and helped below to the nearest dressing station to receive medical attention. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service.
