The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Ensign Harold “B” “J” Barnes (NSN: 0-368407), United States Navy, for heroism and extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight against the enemy as the Pilot of a carrier-based Torpedo Plane. On 7 April 1945 he participated in a torpedo attack against strong units of the Japanese Fleet. This attack severely crippled the entire task force and ended a growing threat to our newly won foothold in Okinawa. His run made through intense anti-aircraft and heavy gun fire, aided in bringing a maneuvering battleship to such a position as to make possible the scoring of two hits by other members of his flight. The coolness and fortitude displayed by him in the performance of his duty was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
