Lieutenant, Junior Grade, Bare, as pilot of a carrier-based Fighter airplane, was assigned to a night search mission. He assisted his leader in successfully locating fleeing enemy forces, and in utter disregard for his own safety, maintained close visual contact and directed our forces to within gun range, thus enabling our forces to attack and sink an enemy cruiser. He tracked this force at a dangerously low altitude and well within range of enemy anti-aircraft fire, providing valuable information for our surface force until ordered to his base.
