Headquarters, 1st Cavalry Division, General Orders No. 25 (July 17, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Motor Machinist’s Mate Second Class Warren W. Winstead, United States Naval Reserve, for heroism involving voluntary risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy at Momoto Airstrip, Los Negros Island, Admiralty Group, on 23 April 1944. When a heavy bomber attempted to land on the strip in a sudden shower, the pilot apparently lost control and the plane crashed at the side of the strip, bursting into flames. Disregarding the extreme danger of explosion of the plane’s heavy cargo of gasoline and bombs, Motor Machinist’s Mate Second Class Winstead rushed to the scene and immediately entered the plane and with other comrades removed the disabled crew. The bravery of Motor Machinist’s Mate Second Class Winstead and his comrades, in devoting their entire effort and strength to the removal of the injured, and their superb disregard of their extreme danger, resulted in the saving of lives and demonstrated the highest sense of devotion to their fellow man.
