The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal to Chief Electrician’s Mate Frederick H. Barbero (NSN: 356356), United States Navy, for extraordinary heroism and outstanding devotion to duty while serving as Chief Electrician’s Mate in the U.S.S. S-35 (SS-140), in enemy waters during World War II. During a serious electrical fire lasting for several hours, which occurred while on patrol in enemy waters, during which the safety of the ship was endangered, he remained at his post of duty without regard for his own personal safety, supervising and effecting various emergency repairs. He continuously entered smoke filled compartments, although suffering from suffocation, continuing to perform his duties to the limit of his physical endurance. This dogged and unselfish devotion to duty materially aided the safe return of his ship to port. His conduct throughout was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
