The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Shipfitter First Class Eugene R. Bambrick (NSN: 6001239), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action as a member of the crew of the U.S.S. LST 336, during the amphibious assault on Italy in 1943. After the U.S.S. LST 336 had beached under heavy enemy fire, Shipfitter First Class Bambrick observed a small un-exploded bomb lying in front of the ramp. Before the vehicles and infantry began to disembark, with utter disregard for his own personal safety, Shipfitter First Class Bambrick picked up the bomb and carried it to the water’s edge, where he threw it into the sea. Later, in the face of enemy machine gun fire, he attempted to light smoke pots on the beach so that the ship and unloading operations would be obscured from enemy artillery fire. The exceptional courage, prompt and decisive action, and complete disregard for his personal safety displayed by Shipfitter First Class Bambrick were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
