The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal to Chief Watertender George Robert Baley (NSN: 3420349), United States Navy, for heroism in connection with his duties in the engine room of the U.S.S. ALYWIN (DD-355). Although fully realizing the danger to his life, he did, without hesitation, enter the engine room, which was at a temperature of 180 degrees Farenheight, and flooding through ventilation hatches, and assisted and supervised as necessary to maintain the plant in operation. By his acts and example he undoubtedly was instrumental in the subsequent saving of the ship, the loss of which seemed inevitable at the time during a typhoon on 18 December 1944. His conduct was at all times in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
