The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Captain (Infantry) Richard B. Crosby, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy as Commanding Officer of an Infantry Company of the 160th Infantry Regiment, 40th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces on 30 January 1945, near Bamban, Luzon, Philippine Islands. During an attack by his battalion, Captain Crosby observed that the advance was delayed by an enemy machine gun and 20-mm. fire. Securing a tank destroyer, he climbed to the rear of the turret and manned the .50 caliber machine gun. From this position he directed the tank destroyer to a point 100 yards from the enemy and by fire from the machine gun pointed out the enemy positions to the gun crew of the tank destroyer. When his ammunition was expended he withdrew, climbed on a second tank destroyer and again led it into position, directing fire in the same manner. After the destruction of all of the enemy positions and while withdrawing, he was wounded in the head by enemy fire. Captain Crosby’s bold and prompt action, and his complete disregard for his own safety were largely instrumental in disorganizing the enemy and making it possible for the continued advance of our forces. His outstanding leadership, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
