The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Lieutenant, Junior Grade Marion Willoughby Baker (NSN: 0-243603), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in the performance of outstanding service on 25 October 1944, as Radar and Air Plot Officer on board the U.S.S. HOEL (DD-533), in maintaining sufficient information to the Evaluator to enable him to give the Commanding Officer a clear picture of the disposition of the enemy ships during the battle. His skill in maintaining the radar equipment in operation while receiving many hits enabled the Commanding Officer to get invaluable information as to the most favorable targets. His outstanding performance of assigned duties while converting true bearings to relative bearings for a plot setup of a gunnery problem, made it possible to maintain accurate main battery fire on the enemy with the enemy obscured by smoke and rain, and the main battery director and fire control radar shot away. His courage and skill were an inspiration to the officers and men in his ship, and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
