The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal to Motor Machinist’s Mate First Class Jack Bailey, United States Navy, for outstanding bravery in attempting to rescue a drowning seaman during the landings on the coast of France, 7 June 1944. Motor Machinist’s Mate First Class Bailey, without regard for his own personal safety, jumped into the water in the presence of mines and underwater obstacles and swam to the assistance of a seaman who had been thrown from his craft by the concussion of an exploding mine. His heroic efforts were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
