The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Commissary Steward First Class Harry Morris Bailey, United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving on board the U.S.S. LST 375 during the amphibious invasion of Italy on 9 September 1943. Commissary Steward First Class Bailey volunteered to act in the capacity of gun captain and pointer on an anti-aircraft gun of the U.S.S. LST 375 during the ship’s approach to one of the assault beaches in the Gulf of Salerno to discharge troops and vehicles. Shortly after beaching, the ship was subjected to three enemy aerial bombing and strafing attacks, during which he coolly and courageously directed accurate anti-aircraft fire against the attacking planes and scored several hits which effectively drove off these attacks. On a further bombing attack, he received wounds from bomb fragments which caused his death. Commissary Steward First Class Bailey’s aggressive and fearless action against the enemy was an inspiration to those about him and contributed materially to the prevention of damage to the ship and its vital assault cargo. The prompt and decisive action, complete disregard for his own safety, and outstanding devotion to duty displayed by Commissary Steward First Class Bailey were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
