The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Ensign James Gay Bagot (NSN: 0-337921), United States Navy, for heroism and extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as pilot of a carrier-based torpedo bomber in an attack on units of the Japanese Fleet in Hiroshima Bay, on 19 March 1945. In pressing home his attack he contributed to the success of the mission which resulted in severe damage to a large fleet tanker protected by intense anti-aircraft fire from shore batteries and large warships nearby. His skill and courage were at all times in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
