The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross (Posthumously) to Lieutenant, Junior Grade Eston Jerome Baden (NSN: 0-301434), United States Navy, for heroism and extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight against the enemy over Honshu, Japan, 17 February 1945. As a member of a division of carrier-based fighters protecting a large flight of bombing and torpedo planes in a coordinated attack on a vital aircraft manufacturing plant far inland, he scored rocket hits on major installations in the target area, and assisted in repelling aggressive enemy fighters encountered throughout this hazardous mission. His skillful airmanship contributed materially to the success of this mission and his courage was at all times in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
