The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Private First Class Roy V. Craft (ASN: 20731515), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company F, 2d Battalion, 18th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces in France, on 2 September 1944. When an enemy machine gun fired upon his vehicle, Private First Class Craft stood erect, and fully exposed to hostile fire, placed accurate .50 caliber machine gun fire into the enemy emplacement, destroying the weapon and killing the crew. As his vehicle proceeded, another machine gun opened fire upon him. Again standing up in the face of close range fire, Private First Class Craft fired coolly, neutralizing the second enemy gun and killing the two gunners. The vehicle again advanced until it came under direct fire from another enemy gun supported by riflemen. Once more Private First Class Craft arose, and standing erect, fired his weapon while machine gun and small arms fire was directed upon him. Killing the enemy gunner with his first burst, he placed heavy fire upon either side of the emplacement and forced twelve enemy soldiers to surrender. Private First Class Craft’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty, exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 1st Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
