The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Ensign Frank Adams Axson (NSN: 0-299268), United States Navy, for heroism and extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight against enemy forces in the vicinity of the Island of Luzon on 19 October 1944. When his formation was attacked by a superior force of enemy fighters, he displayed excellent defensive tactics, shooting one plane off his Division Leader’s tail, assisting his Division Leader in destroying another, and shooting down a third as it was making a run of his leader’s wingman. His skill and courage were at all times in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
