The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting a Gold Star in lieu of a Second Award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to Lieutenant, Junior Grade Deane Cheney Avery (NSN: 0-300881), United States Navy, for heroism and extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight in operations against the enemy during the invasion of Iwo Jima and Okinawa and in the vicinity of Minami Daito Shima and Kyushu. As pilot of a carrier-based dive bomber during the period 19 February 1945 to 30 April 1945, he participated in twenty strikes against enemy airfields, gun positions and installations inflicting extensive damage. His skill and courage were at all times inspiring and in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.

The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Lieutenant, Junior Grade Deane Cheney Avery (NSN: 0-300881), United States Navy, for heroism and extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as Pilot of a carrier-based dive bomber in an attack on the City of Tokyo on 17 February 1945. As a member of a flight of ten dive bombers he participated in a coordinated dive bombing attack on a major Japanese aircraft engine plant. Despite intense, accurate anti-aircraft fire and the constant threat of attack by enemy aircraft, he flew his plane to the assigned target and dropped his bombs squarely on the main group of factory buildings, contributing materially to the extensive damage inflicted on the plant. His skill, determination and courage were at all times in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
