The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Lieutenant Clarence Fred Avery (NSN: 0-84240), United States Navy, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as leader of a flight of United States Navy dive bombers on 20 November 1943. At extreme personal danger above and beyond the call of duty, he, in a plane which had been hit by the intense anti-aircraft fire of an enemy armed merchant vessel which he was attacking, dived upon, scored a direct hit, and sank this vessel. Although his plane had been severely damaged, he did not break off, but resolutely pressed home his attack. His actions on this occasion have since been a source of inspiration to his fellow squadron members. Later the same day, in the face of anti-aircraft fire he again scored a hit upon, and shores credited in the sinking of a large enemy oilier. His actions on these occasions render his conspicuous in the line of his profession. His cool courage and resolute determination to destroy the enemy were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
