The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Army Award) (Posthumously) to Lieutenant, Junior Grade Vincent Alfred Avallone, United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy at Mainz, Germany, on 28 March 1945. Lieutenant Avallone, while aiding in the ferrying of vehicles and assault troops across the Rhine River to establish a bridgehead, came under direct enemy fire. With complete disregard for his own safety he exposed himself to the fire to better direct operations and insure the mission’s success. In so doing his was mortally wounded. Lieutenant Avallone’s bravery and outstanding devotion to duty are worthy of the highest praise and exemplify the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
