(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private First Class Charles Darald Cox (ASN: 14062419), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Headquarters Battery, 7th Field Artillery Battalion, in action against enemy forces in Tunisia in March 1943. When radio communications failed and wire communications were severed, Private First Class Cox, a field artilleryman, ordered his crew to safety and in the face of heavy enemy small arms, mortar and artillery fire, as well as extremely active aircraft attacks, personally repaired the wire. Though painfully wounded, he remained at his task until the enemy attack was routed. His heroism, his courage, initiative and devotion to duty were an inspiration to all who saw him, and reflect the highest traditions of the military service.
