The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal to Lieutenant (MC) John G. Atwood, Jr., United States Navy, for heroic conduct in rescue work during a fire and explosions at Waipio Amphibious Operating Base, Pearl harbor, Territory of Hawaii, on 21 May 1944. In constant peril of flying debris from exploding vessels he led a medical unit along the shore line in search of casualties, and later in disregard of personal safety led a rescue party aboard a severely damaged fire-fighting boat to rescue trapped and injured crewmen and render medical assistance. His bravery and heroism were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
