The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal to Seaman First Class Edgar Artis, United States Navy, for heroism in courageously entering a burning dwelling on the evening of 3 may 1946, in the city of San Francisco, California, and removing therefrom, unassisted, one adult person to safety. Following this rescue, although having been partially overcome by smoke, he re-entered the burning building and assisted in removing a second adult to safety. As a result of this action Seaman First Class Artis sustained slight burns about the arms and face. His conduct showed disregard for his personal safety and was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
