The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal to Aviation Chief Ordnanceman Irving Aronson, United States Navy, for heroism while serving as Flight Deck Ordnance Chief attached to the U.S.S. LANGLEY (CV-27), during the occupation of the Marianas in June 1944. On 17 June 1944, a torpedo plane landed aboard with a five hundred pound bomb which became dislodged and fully armed. With complete disregard for his own safety and application of exceptional skill, he succeeded in removing and disposing of the bomb, thereby preventing major damage to his ship and serious casualties among his shipmates. At all times his conduct was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
