    The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting a Gold Star in lieu of a Second Award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to Lieutenant, Junior Grade George Peter Arnold (NSN: 0-156944), United States Navy, for heroism and extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight in operations against shore installations on Kyushu on 12 July 1945. As commander of a patrol plane he scored three direct hits on a factory, strafed a second factory in which a boiler exploded and participated in attacks which destroyed two locomotives and a train. He aggressively pressed his attacks home in the face of intense and accurate anti-aircraft fire which severed control cables, electrical lines and started a fire in the after station. He directed is crew in extinguishing the fire and in repairing the plane and safely brought the aircraft back to base. His courage and skill were at all times inspiring and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.

    The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Lieutenant, Junior Grade George Peter Arnold (NSN: 0-156944), United States Navy, for heroism and extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight in operations against enemy shipping in the vicinity of Kyushu on 1 July 1945. Lieutenant, Junior Grade, Arnold scored a direct bomb hit on a Japanese tanker which was probably sunk and despite accurate anti-aircraft fire which hit his plane, he made repeated strafing attacks on three enemy merchant vessels, which were destroyed. His skill and courage were at all times inspiring and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
