The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant James Elwood Antrim, United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving on board the U.S.S. LAPON (SS-260) as Chief Engineer and Diving Officer during the THIRD War Patrol of that Submarine in enemy waters from 22 January 1944 to 1 April 1944. Throughout this patrol his submarine operated in enemy controlled waters, often in close proximity to strong and numerous enemy military and naval forces. His submarine was attacked by enemy forces with aerial bombs, depth charges, and gunfire. His gallantry and intrepidity while on the bridge during successful night attacks, during which he manned the target bearing transmitter with cool efficiency, was equaled by the skill with which he maintained depth control o the successful submerged attacks in heavy seas after his submarine had lost the use of the negative tank. His conduct throughout contributed to the damage done to the enemy’s shipping and the safe return of his submarine to port and was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
