The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Legion of Merit with Combat “V” to Captain (SC) Archie A. Antrim (NSN: 0-21651), United States Navy, for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States since the outbreak of the present war, primarily as Force Supply Officer, Service Force, Southwest Pacific Force, from 1 November 1942 to October 1943, but earlier chronologically, as Officer-in-Charge of Supply Disbursing and Accounting, U.S. Navy Forces in Australia, from 2 February 1942 to 31 October 1942. Upon arrival in Australia as Officer-in-Charge of Supply Disbursing and Accounting, U.S. Navy Forces, Captain Antrim in cooperation with the General Purchasing Agent of the Army conceived and organized a Naval Supply depot system with depots located at Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and Fremantle. As a result of his tireless energy, his dynamic leadership, his foresight, initiative and friendly attitude toward the Australians, Captain Antrim was responsible for the speedy acquisition, construction and stocking of the above mentioned supply depots. Through Captain Antrim’s efforts Australian manufacturing production was organized and coordinated in order to supply materials needed by the Navy for the satisfactory prosecution of the war in and near Australia. In his capacity as Force Supply Officer, Service Force, Southwest Pacific Force, Captain Antrim ably directed and administered the purchase, storage and issue of supplies needed by the Fleet in order to carry out its vital operations. An assignment which would have taken some officers many months to complete was accomplished by Captain Antrim and his staff in a matter of weeks, largely because of his inspiring leadership. (Captain Antrim is authorized to wear the Combat “V”.)
