The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal to Boatswain’s Mate Second Class Walter Antonivich, United States Navy, for an outstanding display of bravery in attempting to rescue a drowning seaman during the landings on the coast of France, 7 June 1944. Boatswain’s Mate Second Class Antonivich without regard for his own safety jumped into the water in the presence of mines and underwater obstacles to assist a man who had been thrown from his craft by the concussion of an exploding mine. The heroic action of Boatswain’s Mate Second Class Antonivich on this occasion was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
