The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal (Posthumously) to Pharmacist’s Mate Third Class Harold Robert Anthony (NSN: 8897870), United States Navy, for heroism while attached to the Heavy Cruiser U.S.S. INDIANAPOLIS (CA-35), which was sunk as the result of enemy action three hundred miles north of the Palau Islands, on 30 July 1945. His ship was hit by torpedoes or mined as the result of which she sank in less than fifteen minutes. The only Pharmacist’s Mate in a group of one hundred fifty survivors, he worked unceasingly to save the lives and bring comfort to many of his shipmates up until he gave his life due to complete exhaustion on the morning of 2 August. Although realizing twelve hours before his death that without rest he wouldn’t survive, he continued to aid his comrades. His determination and unselfish and heroic conduct throughout were outstanding and in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
