The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Legion of Merit with Combat “V” to Lieutenant, Junior Grade (MC) John E. Annitto (NSN: 0-190836), United States Navy, for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States as Medical Officer assigned to an attack group during the amphibious assault on the West Coast of Italy in 1943. While proceeding to a ship in the Gulf of Salerno by small boat, Lieutenant, Junior Grade, Annitto observed that a nearby craft had sustained a direct hit from an enemy shore battery. Without hesitation, he ordered the small boat alongside the stricken vessel, went aboard and rendered first aid to the wounded. Although the craft was still under heavy shellfire, he continued his work with calm, cool efficiency in an exposed position and, by virtue of his courage, perseverance and skill, many lives were saved. The initiative, prompt and decisive action and outstanding devotion to duty displayed by Lieutenant, Junior Grade, Annitto reflected great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. (Lieutenant, Junior Grade, Annitto is authorized to wear the Combat “V”.)
