The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal to Pharmacist’s Mate Second Class John Angeloff, Jr. (NSN: 3061685), United States Navy, for heroism while serving with a Marine Infantry Regiment in action against the enemy on Peleliu Island, Palau Group. On 22 September 1944, one of the 37 millimeter guns of the Regimental Weapons Company received a direct hit from an enemy mortar shell, causing two deaths and wounded Pharmacist’s Mate Second Class Angeloff and six members of the crew. With utter disregard for his own safety and while under heavy enemy fire, he proceeded to render first aid to his wounded comrades, refusing aid for himself until all were evacuated. His unselfish and heroic conduct was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
