The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Watertender Third Class Charles Angelo, United States Navy, for heroism in removing his shipmate from the forward fireroom of the U.S.S. JENKINS (DD-447), when that ship had struck a mine off Tarakan Island, Borneo, on 30 April 1945. Due to the explosion severe damage had opened the fireroom to the sea and the compartment was filled with wreckage, water and escaping steam. Without thought for his own safety and without hesitation, Watertender Third Class Angelo forced his shipmate before him and pushed and carried him up the ladder to safety on the main deck. His prompt and courageous action undoubtedly saved the man’s life. His courage through was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
