As Patrol Plane Commander of a Navy Patrol Bomber, he maintained aerial cover over a life guard submarine proceeding to pick up an Army fighter pilot in a raft in the entrance to Tokyo Bay, notwithstanding the departure of fighter cover and the sighting of enemy reconnaissance planes with the strong probability of immediate attack by enemy fighter planes. He fought off an aggressive attack by three enemy fighters and successfully piloted his badly damaged plane to base. His courage in the face of the indicated hazards was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
