The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal to Seaman First Class William Edward Anderson (NSN: 6691155), United States Navy, for heroism during the fighting of fires attendant on an explosion at Naval Magazine, Port Chicago, on 17 July 1944. As a member of the fire-fighting squad of the Seaman Guard at that station, he volunteered with utter disregard for his own safety to enter a highly dangerous area in which were burning ammunition boxcars. Exercising coolness and judgment, and working in or on these cars, he contributed to bringing the flames under control, thereby averting further explosions and possible loss of life. His conduct during this extreme emergency and his devotion to his voluntary duty was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
