The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Legion of Merit with Combat “V” to Captain William Donald Anderson (NSN: 0-57915), United States Navy, for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States as Commanding Officer of an Escort Carrier of the United States Navy in combat operations against the enemy at Okinawa Gunto, during the period 21 March to 29 April 1945. The heavy damage inflicted on the enemy by the aircraft of his ship was of vital assistance in the support of our amphibious forces and our troops on shore, and contributed materially to the early and successful conclusion of operations against the enemy. The highly efficient performance of his carrier was directly attributable to his inspiring leadership and his outstanding professional skill. During all of the period of these strenuous and hazardous operations his personal courage was of the highest order and his conduct was at all times in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
