    The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal to Aviation Machinist’s Mate Second Class Vernon K. Anderson, United States Navy, for heroism in rescuing a shipmate. As a member of the flight Crew of a PHB-3D, which was destroyed by enemy action on the night of 26 – 27 December 1944, he at great risk to his own personal safety went to the aid of his shipmate who had been critically wounded and kept him afloat for approximately three hours. His heroic conduct was in accordance with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.

    The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Aviation Machinist’s Mate Second Class Vernon K. Anderson, United States Navy, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight in the Southwest Pacific Area during the period from 23 December 1944 to 1 March 1945. Aviation Machinist’s Mate Second Class Anderson completed twenty flights in a combat area where enemy anti-aircraft fire was expected to be effective or where enemy aircraft patrols usually occurred. His conduct throughout has distinguished him among those performing duties of the same character.
