The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal to Seaman Second Class Ronald (Rowland) R. Anderson, United States Coast Guard, for heroism in action above and beyond the call of duty in helping to rescue survivors from the U.S.S. ST. AUGUSTINE on the night of 6 January 1943. Seaman Anderson, attached to U.S.C.G.C. ARGO, repeatedly jeopardized his own safety by jumping overboard into life rafts and into the water to rescue the almost frozen and drowning survivors and bring them aboard his ship. His action resulted in the saving of many lives that otherwise would have been lost. This action reflects great credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service.
