The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal to Lieutenant, Junior Grade Roger A. Anderson (NSN: 0-554815), United States Navy, for heroism in the performance of his duties while serving on board the U.S.S. EATON (DDE-510), on 6 May 1956, when that ship was involved in a collision at sea with the U.S.S. WISCONSIN (BB-64), during a dense fog. The EATON sustained a thirty-foot gash about 100 feet aft of the bow on her starboard side extending from main deck to below the waterline and inboard almost to the centerline. Lieutenant, Junior Grade, Anderson, Chief Engineer, displayed outstanding initiative, judgment, and courage in operating the engineering plant, and in isolating the damaged area, personally proceeding through this damaged area without regard to personal safety at a time when sinking, breakaway of ship’s bow, or ammunition explosion was of prime consideration. By his own action he secured escaping steam lines, water lines, and isolated electrical power to the damaged area. He personally checked all damage control fittings for proper closure. Through his action danger to the ship was controlled and the ship was able to return to port. His continuous watch to prevent progressive damage during the 26-hour trip to port, without rest, was of the highest order of devotion to duty. His conduct, leadership, skillful application of professional skill and devotion to duty was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
