The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Lieutenant James W. Anderson (NSN: 0-104753), United States Navy, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as Patrol Plane Commander of a Navy Patrol Bomber in Japanese home waters on 28 July and 5 August 1945. In company with another plane, he sank all of a fleet of thirteen trawlers and smaller vessels near the Eastern Coast of Honshu. He and his wingman were attacked by eight aggressive enemy fighter aircraft. Two were shot down and the other six damages. His courage and success against such heavy odds were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
