The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Ensign Jack Darrell Anderson (NSN: 0-176858), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while participating in an aerial flight as pilot of a United States Navy Fighter Plane, on 15 July 1943, when an enemy submarine was attacked. Ensign Anderson was engaged in an anti-submarine patrol when an enemy submarine was sighted fully surfaced. He attacked immediately on attaining a favorable position. Despite heavy anti-aircraft fire from the submarine, Ensign Anderson made four strafing runs which damaged the conning tower, forced exposed anti-aircraft personnel to take cover, and caused the defenseless submarine to submerge in a futile attempt to avoid the ensuing bombing attack of a companion plane. The action described above in which an enemy submarine was probably destroyed as a result of a coordinated fighter bomber attack reflects great credit upon the United States Naval Service.
