The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Private Claude E. Conway (ASN: 34872375), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving as a Medical Aidman with the Medical Detachment, 30th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces at Cave, Italy, on 3 June 1944. While the company to which he was attached as Aidman was engaged in a fire fight with the enemy, an intense enemy artillery concentration fell on the hill Private Conway and his comrades were occupying. Heavy casualties were inflicted. Heeding the cries of the wounded, Private Conway left his foxhole, ran 15 yards through shell fire and was hit in the leg. Despite his wounds, Private Conway in 30 minutes crawled 75 yards, five to ten times, over hilly terrain, under almost continuous gun fire to administer first aid to the wounded men. This completed, he crawled another 25 yards to a fifteenth wounded man. Before he reached the soldier Private Conway was fatally wounded. His extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty at the cost of his life, exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 3d Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
