Headquarters, U.S. Army Forces-Pacific Ocean Areas, General Orders No. 8 (August 5, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Wilbert Leon Conrad, Jr. (ASN: 0-447463), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with the 160th Infantry Regiment (Separate), 40th Infantry Division, attached to V Amphibious Corps, in action against enemy forces at Eniwetok Atoll, Marshall Islands, on 19 February 1944. Commanding the first LCT’s to assault Engebi Island, Lieutenant Conrad landed and debarked his wave in perfect timing to take full advantage of the artillery support available. When he attempted to move his vehicle inland he found that enemy machine guns and small arms fire kept the riflemen pinned to the ground making it impossible to drive through them, without a dismounted guide. With complete disregard for his own safety, Lieutenant Conrad left his LCT and standing in the face of enemy fire, moved among the mobile troops, whereby his personal example and direction he encouraged them to deploy. By his heroic action and fine leadership Lieutenant Conrad kept the beach clear for other oncoming troops and vehicles and assured the establishment of a secure beachhead. First Lieutenant Conrad’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
