The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Legion of Merit to Commander Alexander Salley Heyward, Jr., United States Navy, for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States as Commanding Officer of a patrol squadron from November 1943 to January 1944. Commander Heyward established an anti-submarine patrol at Port Lyautey, French Morocco, after the assault on and capture of French Morocco, 8 – 11 November 1942, and courageously led his squadron on numerous hazardous missions during the following two months. He contributed immeasurably to the security of U.S. Naval forces and shipping during the capture and occupation of French Morocco.

(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: Vice Admiral Alexander Salley Heyward, Jr., United States Navy, was awarded the Navy Distinguished Service Medal for exceptionally meritorious and distinguished service in a position of great responsibility to the Government of the United States as Chief of Naval Air Training, from 26 June 1964 to 31 July 1968. His singularly distinctive accomplishments and his dedicated contributions in the service of his country reflect the highest credit upon himself and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
