The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal (Posthumously) to Hospital Corpsman Third Class Richard N. Gauthier, United States Navy, for heroism on 6 May 1966, while serving aboard U.S.S. INTREPID (CVS-11). Petty Officer Gauthier entered a vertical trunk and pump-room space containing a toxic and lethal concentration of gas to give mouth-to-mouth resuscitation and first aid to a shipmate trapped there. Within minute, he was overcome by the deadly gas, sacrificing his life in an attempt to save the lives of his shipmates.
