Fitzsimmons, United States Navy, was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight on 23 November 1966, as a Pilot in a Fighter Squadron. Without benefit of any pre-flight briefing, he volunteered to escort a photographic reconnaissance aircraft on a mission to cover two targets in the Haiphong complex in North Vietnam. Despite heavy enemy artillery fire and surface-to-air missiles, he successfully escorted the photo plane to the safety of the Gulf of Tonkin.
