(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: Chief Hospital Corpsman Paul J. Heckert, Jr., United States Navy, was awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Medal for heroism on 6 October 1966, while serving aboard U.S.S. ESCAPE (ARS-6), berthed at San Juan, Puerto Rico. Petty Officer Heckert entered an unventilated space to assist in the recovery of a victim overcome by lethal fumes.
