(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private John Evans Combs, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company E, 2d Battalion, 126th Infantry Regiment, 32d Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces on 1 December 1942, during the Papuan Campaign in New Guinea. On that date, Private Combs platoon was checked in front of an enemy fortified position. As platoon scout, Private Combs worked his way past the enemy position and, coming up from the rear with a Tommy gun, he killed at least 12 of them. He fired until is ammunition was exhausted. His heroic action enabled the platoon to advanced and capture the position. Private Combs continued the advance with his comrades until he was wounded and evacuated. His extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 32d Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
