(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant, Junior Grade Richard Eugene Benson, United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in connection with military operations against the enemy while serving as Pilot of a helicopter in Helicopter Squadron FOUR (HU-4), on 2 May 1966, while participating in the rescue of a downed airman in North Vietnam. Lieutenant, Junior Grade, Benson hovered his helicopter and succeeded in rescuing the airman while under attack from intense enemy fire at very close range. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Naval Service.
