(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Gordon C. Wileen, United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in connection with military operations against the enemy during an air rescue mission deep in enemy territory in North Vietnam, on 7 November 1965. Lieutenant Wileen persisted in searching even though sustaining damage to his aircraft from heavy anti-aircraft fire. Lieutenant Wileen then minimized further damage to his aircraft when he was forced to crash-land at a friendly airfield. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Naval Service.
