The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private First Class Anthony Patrick Coll (ASN: 33245951), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving as a Medical Aidman with the Medical Detachment, 168th Infantry Regiment, 34th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Taboura Pass, Tunisia, on 6 May 1943. Observing six men in an adjacent unit wounded by a mortar shell, Private First Class Coll, with complete disregard for his own safety, left his own unit’s position and although under heavy machine gun and mortar fire, administered first aid to the four men who were still alive and returned them to a position of safety. Later, when an officer was wounded by a sniper, Private First Class Coll left his position of safety, although shelling was heavy and the sniper was active, and ran to his aid. He fearlessly supplied machine gunners, mortarmen and riflemen with water during the battle. Private First Class Coll’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
